On Friday, January 10, 2025, Age-Friendly Regina hosted a “Discovery Meeting” to learn more about Social Prescribing and to explore the potential for an initiative to start here in Regina. We had an amazing turnout—48 people—including a healthy mix of community members, service providers, and potential prescribers!
What is Social Prescribing ?
Social Prescribing is a holistic healthcare approach that connects patients with non-medical services and community resources to improve well-being. Instead of relying only on medication, it encourages referrals to activities and services like:
- Exercise classes and art workshops
- Counseling and mental health support
- Volunteering opportunities
- Social clubs and peer support groups
- Financial and housing advice
By addressing social, emotional, and practical needs, this approach helps improve health outcomes and quality of life. It acknowledges the role of social factors in health and empowers individuals through community involvement. Social prescribing also offers positive social and economic benefits.
Social Prescribing in Saskatchewan
The Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism (SSM) received four year funding and is collaborating with the Health Quality Council to support the creation of Social Prescribing projects in 14 communities throughout Saskatchewan. There are currently programs running in both Moose Jaw and Shaunavon, with one in Candle Lake getting started. While Social Prescribing can benefit everyone, this project is specifically for adults aged 55+.
This project will require community support to be successful.
What We Need to Move Forward
For this initiative to become a reality in Regina, we’ll need strong community support. Specifically, we’re looking for people to step into the following roles:
- Anchoring Entity– An organization to hold funds and handle payments for the Community Connector.
- Steering Committee– A small group (4-5 people) to set direction and guide the Community Connector’s work.
- Stakeholder Group– Community members and service providers who want to stay involved, share ideas, and offer support when needed.
How You Can Get Involved
If you’re interested in shaping what Social Prescribing could look like in Regina—and you’re willing to take on one of the roles above—please send an email to agefriendlyregina@gmail.com by Friday, January 24, 2025.
With the limited hours and large population, the Connector’s work will likely focus on a specific area rather than the entire city, all to be determined if things move forward.
This initiative complements programs like Age-Friendly Communities, Facilitating Independence Grants, and the Thrive at Home network, all aimed at helping older adults across Saskatchewan live safely at home for longer.
